Notification of the domicile of a mid- to long term resident

Procedures for notification of a domicile with regard to mid- to long term residents shall be categorized into the following three.
In any of these procedures, a notification shall be made at a municipality where the relevant person's domicile is located, not at a regional immigration office.

1 Procedures for notification of a domicile after newly landing in Japan

A mid- to long term resident who possesses a residence card issued upon newly obtaining a landing permit at a port of entry or departure, or a passport containing the statement to the effect that a residence card will be issued later (hereinafter referred to as a "residence card, etc.") must notify his/her domicile to the Minister of Justice at an office of the municipality where the said domicile is located, while bringing his/her residence card, etc., within 14 days from the day on which he/she decided the domicile.

When such mid- to long term resident has presented his/her residence card, etc. and has filed his/her moving-in notification under the Basic Resident Registration System, such moving-in notification shall be deemed to be a notification of a domicile.

2 Procedures for notification of a domicile in connection with a change in the status of residence, etc.

A foreign national who had not been a mid- to long term resident but has newly become a mid- to long term resident as a result of having obtained permits relating to the status of residence, such as for a change of the status of residence or the extension of the period of stay, or for the acquisition of the status of residence, must notify his/her domicile to the Minister of Justice at an office of the municipality where the said domicile is located, while bringing his/her residence card, etc., within 14 days from the day on which he/she decided the domicile (or for a mid- to long term resident who had already decided his/her domicile, from the day on which he/she obtained the said permit).

When such mid- to long term resident has presented his/her residence card, etc. and has filed his/her moving-in notification under the Basic Resident Registration System, such moving-in notification shall be deemed to a notification of a domicile.

3 Procedures for notification of a change of a domicile

A mid- to long term resident who has changed his/her domicile must notify his/her new domicile to the Minister of Justice at an office of the municipality where the said new domicile is located, while bringing his/her residence card, etc., within 14 days from the day on which he/she moved into the new domicile.

When such mid- to long term resident has presented his/her residence card, etc. and has filed his/her moving-in notification under the Basic Resident Registration System, such notification shall be deemed to be a notification of a domicile.
