Departure Procedures foreign nationals
Any foreign national intending to leave Japan must receive confirmation of departure from immigration inspector. The immigration authority confirms each foreign nationals' departure from Japan in order to precisely get grip on foreign nationals leaving Japan. The confirmation of departure scheme does not put any restriction on foreign national's departure from Japan.
In principle, the immigration authority confirms foreign national's departure from Japan by affixing the stamp on the foreign national's passport. If a foreign national has landed Japan with a valid certificate, the immigration authority collects the certificate from the foreign national. When a foreign national intends to depart from Japan with a re-entry permit (including a Special Re-entry Permit), he/she also needs to receive confirmation of departure before departing from Japan.
As a result of departure, the status of residence and period of stay permitted for a foreign national while he/she stays in Japan shall lapse, but if a foreign national has departed from Japan with a re-entry permit (including a Special Re-entry Permit), and when he/she re-enters Japan within the period of validity for said re-entry permit, the status of residence and period of stay shall be deemed to continue as before.
If a foreign national leaves Japan or attempts to leave Japan without departure confirmation, the foreign national will be subject to criminal penalty (Article 71 of the Immigration Control Act).
